Cove Data Protection 25.6 with improved efficiency
N-able recently released Cove Data Protection version 25.6 which brought us new features that improved efficiency, resilience and reliability. These updates also further improved ease of use and enhanced Microsoft 365 backup and recovery capabilities, along with the Linux System State Support.
ESXi/vCenter 6.0 – 6.5 Support End of Life
Before we mention new capabilities and improvements, it is important to mention that from August 31, 2025. Cove is upgrading to VDDK 8.0, which will impact backups and restores from older VMware ESXi and vCenter versions.
All new backups and restores from versions v6.0-6.5 will fail. Upgrade your VMware environment, both your hypervisor (ESXi) and vCenter to 6.7 U3+ or later to ensure that your data protection through Cove continues seamlessly.
Platform Enhancements
In this new version Cove has implemented several platform enhancements and bug fixes to improve user experience and functionality.
-
Backup Dashboard - "Physicality" Column: The "maximum value report" on the Backup Dashboard now includes a new column called "Physicality." This column allows you to determine whether a device is "physical," "virtual," or "undefined," providing more detailed information immediately.
-
Retention Policies - Improved UI: The user interface (UI) for managing Retention Policies has been enhanced, aiming to provide a more intuitive and user-friendly experience.
-
Total Columns Formatting: A bug related to the formatting of "Total" columns has been fixed.
-
Recovery Reliability: Cove has enhanced its recovery features by fixing issues that caused "Failed to boot," "Failed to lock volume," and "Failed to map virtual path" errors, improving the reliability of one-time restores, Standby Image, and Recovery Testing.
Microsoft 365 Backup and Recovery
Cove has implemented several key enhancements to Microsoft 365 support, making backup and recovery more efficient and secure. These include smarter SharePoint permissions handling for quicker backups, an upgraded encryption engine (OpenSSL 3.5.0) for up to 36x faster encryption tasks, and enhanced, more reliable restore capabilities for Litigation Hold mailboxes, ensuring all attachments are fully restored.
Improved Linux System State Support
In this area Cove has made some important enhancements to how it backs up and recovers data from Linux computers.
Key improvements of Linux System State backup and recovery include:
-
Ubuntu 24.04 DNS Fix: The rescue system now correctly captures DNS servers in /etc/resolv.conf, resolving failed Backup Manager installations during recovery.
-
Missing Dependencies Fix: Required parted and bc tools are now automatically installed, fixing System State backup failures caused by missing ReaR dependencies.
-
Improved Error Messaging: Error messages from the System State plugin are now clearer and more actionable.
-
Profile Application Fix: Profiles now apply correctly to Linux devices with the System State data source, eliminating the need for the previous re-save workaround.
-
Feature Flag Enforcement: System State backups will no longer incorrectly start on devices without the necessary feature flag.
-
Red Hat Compatibility Fix: System State backups on Red Hat 8 and 9 no longer fail when dhclient is absent.
It is worth noting that Linux state support is available under feature preview, so expect more improvements and bug fixes.
